One of my “wajib tanya” question in an interview is this: what’s your dream?

Well, before I asked that question, I begin with the backstory of the guy who made the quote famous, Simon Squibb. To those that are active on TikTok for whatever reason and actually make use of the platform, might have came across or appeared in your FYP. He’s a guy that goes around wherever city he was in and asked people at random; what’s your dream.

I do not have the resources to go at people randomly in the street, so I asked people in a close-setting – an interview.

In my almost a decade of career as a Creative Director (not the official title at the workplace), I’ve had the opportunity of interviewing probably close to a 50 creative individuals from various background. And hired about 20 of them.

There’s a lot that you can learn from a person by the answer they given. At least for me, I learn a lot about them. About who they are, what are their vision and mission in life and whatever else about who they think they are as a person and creative.

But, if I’m honest, I’ve yet to come across a person that have given an answer that made me rethink everything. Unlike Simon Squibb in his videos, there are a lot of people that he goes to that actually a very intriguing answer. An answer that made you stop everything and actually questions your life decision. I’ve yet to come across this kind of people.

But probably, since it’s in an interview setting, people were not being themselves. They need to be the best version. Maybe.

But I do remember one.

He said that he wants to be a “someone” someday, like a boss. When asked back, why?

His answer was, “sebab masa tu boleh goyang kaki.”

I’m still not sure if that’s a good answer.

Anyway, what’s yours? (dream).
